What to Wear this Fall

September’s here, the kids are back in school and I’m back to work. Other than some commitments with clients, I was able to take the month of August off to spend time with my kids, go on holiday and renovate my bathroom. Well, I didn’t actually renovate, but I was a pretty good supervisor.

Now that I’m back at it and the weather has cooled off, it’s time to start talking Fall trends. I typically start keeping my eye out for Fall trends in the summer and while this year was no different, I really didn’t get into any deep research until a couple of weeks ago. What I was surprised to find was that many of this year’s trends were similar to or an extension of last year’s.

Here’s a list of some of what’s trending this Fall. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself recognizing some of them from last year or that you’ve already got a few pieces tucked away in your closet.

What to Wear This Fall

Colours: Cobalt, Oxblood and Hunter Green

As with any other time of year, when the season changes, fashion’s colours change along with it. Cobalt and Oxblood were on the radar last year, so you’ve probably purchased some pieces in those colours, but what might be new to you is Hunter Green. Of course it’s a great colour for Fall, but make sure that if you’re going to wear it (or any other colour for that matter) by your face, that it’s the right colour for you skin tone. If not, buy pieces that sit somewhere else on your body – pants, handbag, etc.

Animal Prints

I’m starting to wonder if animal prints will ever be out of style. At this rate, I can’t see it happening anytime soon. So, if you’ve got any snakeskin, leopard or cheetah lying around, bring it on out and put it to work.

Menswear

Oxfords, tweeds, trousers and button-downs – if you picked up any menswear inspired pieces last year, don’t get rid of them just yet. Just remember to pair them with some feminine pieces to create a more balanced look.

Punk

I love all the studs, chains and leather of the Punk trend. (Maybe because I never had the guts to go all Sid and Nancy when I was young.)  If this look’s just not for you, how about trying some simple accessories with metal details or embellishments to add some edge to your look?

Plaid

Plaid is huge for Fall this year and whether you attribute it to Menswear or Punk, it’s so versatile you could wear it any way. How about a pair of plaid pants, a pencil skirt or plaid top? If that’s too much, a pair of plaid socks peeking out from the top of your booties could keep you on trend but in a subtle way.

Statement Coats

For Canadians, coats are a must-have but you don’t have to choose function over fashion – you can have both. Whether you choose an oversized, boxy or brightly coloured coat, try to make a bold statement with the choice you make.

Motorcycle Jackets

I seriously hope you haven’t gotten rid of your motorcycle jacket from your riding days because these babies aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The great thing about them is that they’re extremely versatile and can really make an outfit. If they’re a bit much for you, keep your eye out for moto-inspired jackets in lighter colours and fabrics or those that merely borrow some of the detailing.

Sweaters

Sweaters are another item that will never go out of style. They’re almost synonymous with the Fall season and you really can’t have one without the other. I love seeing a great big sweater with some skinnies and boots. Throw on a scarf and maybe some gloves (if it’s really chilly) and you’ve got yourself the perfect Fall look.

Leather Pants/Leggings

Didn’t manage to pick up a pair of leather (or leather-like) pants or leggings last year? Well the good news is that you can keep looking. Leather pants (whether real or faux) are on the hot list this season, so you’ll get another shot at finding the perfect pair.

Boots & Booties

Last year I wrote a piece about which boots to keep from the previous year ( http://hotchickswithstyle.com/last-years-boot-trends-to-wear-this-fall/ ), and I’m surprised to say that I wouldn’t change much. I might pass on the hiking and western boots as they’re not as strong this year and I’m kind of done with the over-the-knee boots (even though they’re still being made), but I’d definitely add the split front boots with a pointy toe because they’re super hot right now. Other than that, hang on to your boots and booties, because any day now (if not already), you’re going to need them.

Top Handle Bag

If you don’t already have one or if you buy any bag this season, make sure it’s a top handle. Top handle bags are the bag of the season and there are a variety of styles, colours and price points to choose from. Just promise me this – if you find the perfect bag, send me a pic. I’m on the hunt, because we all know – a girl can never have too many bags.
